5/30/25 Copper river, exploring Wrengell St. Elias National Park

Pop quiz, what is the largest national park in US? it is this little known one that we are checking out today…. Wrengell St. Elias National Park and reserve is 13.2 million acres and it’s bigger than Yellowstone, Yosemite and Switzerland combined…

Tour the Visitor center first to get our national park stamped first…

In the afternoon we joined a tour via  a scenic van ride and interpretive discussion with a professional naturalist guide. This tour is operated by local nonprofit Wrangell Institute for Science and Environment (WISE) and left us with a sense of peace and awe.. WISE’s educational programs, which cultivate observational skills, understanding of nature and stewardship ethics.

Local celebrities Arctic lupin and ptamigan
Spruce tips are very tasty… I probably ate 20 of these
They took us to their reserve’s rustic camp where we touched skins and skulls of local wildlife… Including big grizzly bears.. And our guide Jen did it in such a respectful gentle way
Our wonderful guides Jen and Cecilia, there’s only two participants in today’s tour so it became a private tour and we can really go deep into subjects..  Jen is a real frontier women who’s originally from Michigan and now she’s a bona fide frontier woman… Homestead, dog sled, hunting, parking preservation. Youth education….
Back from windy and cold wilderness to our warm lodge… Cheers to our wonderful stay here 🥂
